To provide US Military Veterans, our country’s defenders of freedom, with a day of fishing therapy in the Florida Everglades as a way to empower them in a relaxing environment and to honor their military service.
FWAF provides a catch-and-release bass fishing experience in the Florida Everglades that offers a relaxing environment and a peaceful day of “fishing therapy” with Capt. Neal Stark, professional bass fisherman. “America’s Finest” men and women who have served our country, and members of their family, are provided with everything they need for a successful day of fishing at no cost to program participants. FWAF provides the professional bass fishing boat and the rods, reels, tackle and lunch for their day in the Florida Everglades. Capt. Neal Stark shares his knowledge and passion for the sport of bass fishing through a casual conversation about fishing techniques and strategy.
Who We Serve
FWAF serves US Military Veterans and their families in the South Florida area of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The majority of Veterans participating in the “fishing therapy” program have physical and emotional wounds that resulted from their military service. Many of these Veterans have become withdrawn and gradually disconnect from life remaining in their homes and unable to relax, associate with others or sleep for any length of time. They become home bound and shy away from interacting with people.
FWAF empowers our Veterans by taking them out of their home environment for a half or full day of fishing. This change of environment and a casual conversation with Capt. Stark throughout the day brings the Veteran out of the shadow of whatever they are dealing and into a relaxing environment and the sport of fishing. While Capt. Stark is neither a trained counselor nor psychologist, he has the ability through conversation to get Veterans to laugh, relax and open up about whatever they want to talk about during their trip.
